When’s the last time you saw a list of science fiction books for teens?

It’s nearly impossible to be part of today’s young adult book community without smacking into a wall of YA fantasy novels. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. Young adult fantasy novels are popular for a reason: they’re amazing!

But my first literary love, young adult science fiction, has thousands of mind-blowing stories to add to the YA bookish community. Each year, I only get more irritated as young adult fantasy books overshadow their young adult sci-fi counterparts. They deserve equal hype!

If you’re a fantasy lover, then you might tell me young adult sci-fi books aren’t for you. There’s not enough romance, it’s too unbelievable, aliens are boring…

So I’ve made it my mission to change your mind. You’ve got to give YA sci-fi a chance! You just might find a new favorite series…or 12.

Check out this list of 10 young adult sci-fi books for fans of YA fantasy to discover a whole new world of reading! For each book rec, I’ve broken down its similarities to popular young adult fantasy reads to help you decide which one you’ll love the most.

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival mega-corporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now, with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra – who are barely even talking to each other – are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents – including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more – Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
